"We train as if our lives depend on it -
because they do!"

Training is an essential component to providing effective services. Properly trained, a fire department can control and contain almost any situation with minimal damage and loss of life.

The training provided to a firefighter is as diverse as the type of calls responded to. One moment, firefighters may be battling a structure fire, and the next they are assisting a person who has fallen out of his or her wheelchair. From the moment a firefighter joins the department and continuing until his or her retirement, he or she is immersed in training.

Regular training meetings are held every Monday beginning at 7 p.m. at Station 1. Outlying stations often hold their own training on apparatus housed in their station. Monday night training sessions may include:
  • Structural firefighting
  • Vehicle extrication
  • Wildland firefighting
  • High angle rescues
  • Confined space rescues
  • Trench rescues
  • Hazardous materials
  • Building collapse
  • Emergency medical training
  • Animal rescue
  • Search and rescue
  • Water rescue
Our department also joins forces with other Lake area departments and participates in joint training throughout the year. Please take a look at the photo gallery to view pictures of some of these events. Advanced training is also provided at the winter and summer fire schools.

Many of our volunteers are Firefighter 1 & 2 state certified. Several have also completed the emergency medical technician class. The nature of firefighting is dangerous and no matter how much or how often we train, the danger will always exist. However, these risks can be minimized through an effective and aggressive training program. The goal of the training program is to create realistic environments, combining classroom and hands-on instruction and evaluation and critique of past performances through post incident analysis.
